2. What personal data we collect & why
We only collect the minimum information needed to run our site, optional Cookie Jar accounts, and newsletter:
- Email address and display name — when you create an account, subscribe, or contact us.
- Cookie Jar progress — unique article IDs, reading dates, level, category badges, weekly challenge status, streaks, and recent reading history when you choose to save progress to an account.
- Contact messages — if you email us or use a contact form.
- Security information — limited technical information used for registration rate limiting, email verification, and spam prevention.
- Cookies and analytics — to provide basic site functionality, understand site use, and improve performance.
We do not sell your personal information to third parties.
3. How we use your data
- To preserve Cookie Jar progress across devices when you create an account.
- To send the newsletter only when you separately opt in.
- To respond to your inquiries.
- To improve site content and performance.
- To detect and prevent spam or malicious activity.
Reading Game Cookies remains free and does not require an account.
4. Browser storage, cookies & tracking
The Cookie Jar uses local browser storage to remember article IDs you have opened, the visual bite stage, whether a recent Drama Alert has been shown, and whether the account reminder has appeared. Guest progress stays on that browser unless you create or sign in to an account. When you register, the browser sends the saved article IDs to your account so the progress can merge automatically.
You can clear this guest progress through your browser's site-data controls. Blocking browser storage or cookies may prevent progress, login, and some site functions from working correctly.
5. Who we share your data with
WordPress stores account and Cookie Jar progress data for the site. If you separately select the optional newsletter checkbox, your email address and name are also sent to MailPoet for subscription confirmation and newsletter delivery. Other trusted hosting, security, analytics, or contact-form providers receive only the information required to provide their services.
6. How long we keep your data
- Cookie Jar account and progress data — until you delete the account or request erasure.
- Guest Cookie Jar progress — until you clear the site's browser storage.
- Newsletter data — until you unsubscribe or request deletion, subject to limited suppression records needed to honor the unsubscribe request.
- Contact messages — up to 12 months.
- Analytics data — anonymized after 26 months.
7. Your rights and controls
Depending on your location, you may have rights to access, export, correct, or erase your data and to opt out of marketing. Signed-in readers can delete their Cookie Jar account from its dashboard. WordPress's privacy tools can also export or erase saved Cookie Jar progress. Newsletter consent can be withdrawn through the unsubscribe link in any email.
Email us at privacy@gamecookies.news to exercise these rights.
8. Changes to this policy
We may update this policy from time to time. If we make significant changes, we'll post a notice on our site.
